With last year’s drought in Northern Kentucky, now is a great time to aerate and over-seed your lawn. Aeration is a process in which small holes are punched into your lawn and a plug of soil is extracted.
The small holes that are created range from 2-4 inches in depth. The benefit of this process is that you are allowing oxygen and water to get into the roots and soil, allowing your lawn to breath. In times of drought, like we had last year this soil becomes very compacted and when it does rain the water has to tendency to just wash off and not soak into the root system as it should.
The best time to aerate you lawn is in the spring or fall, but with the high clay content we have here in Kentucky I recommend it do be done twice per year.
You can either rent an aeration machine from your local Home Depot or you can contact Brawley’s Landscape for a free estimate.
